Debalina Acharyya wins 2023 Three Minute Thesis Competition

Profile

BCMB PhD student Deb Acharyya was the 1st place winner in the 2023 Three Minute Thesis Final Competition. This competition challenges graduate students to talk about their research in a clear and engaging manner in only 3 minutes and using only 1 slide. A panel of judges select the participants who they feel give the most successful presentations. 

Deb dissertation project is focused on the mechanisms by which neurons show resilience to excitotoxic stress. She uses the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) as a model system and has found that microglia are essential for protecting the SCN from the deleterious effects of excitotoxicity.

Ralph Lydic elected as Fellow in the American Physiological Society 

Profile

Psychology faculty member Ralph Lydic was recently elected to the rank of Fellow in the American Physiological Society (APS). The rank of Fellow in APS is an elite member status reserved to honor distinguished leaders who have demonstrated excellence in science, have made significant contributions to physiological sciences and related disciplines and have served the Society. The designation of Fellow is an honor and shall remain valid for the duration of APS membership. Candidates should consider the advancement to Fellow status to be an opportunity to become more active in the internal affairs of the Society, including serving in a leadership capacity.

Joel Anderson and colleagues receive NIH R01 award

Profile

College of Nursing faculty member Joel Anderson and colleagues received a $3.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health. The project is focused on improving caregiving for people living with dementia and is titled “Enhancing Measurement and Characterization of Roles and Experiences of Sexual and Gender Minority Caregivers of Persons Living with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias”.

Anderson and his team will initiate a comprehensive study on the experiences, roles, and dynamics of LGBTQIA+ caregivers of people living with dementia. Previous research from Anderson’s team has highlighted health disparities experienced by LGBTQIA+ caregivers, such as caregiver stigma, symptoms of depression, and discrimination. The study will use a community-based participatory approach and will leverage the expertise of advisory boards and caregiving experts to identify obstacles experienced by LGBTQIA+ caregivers. In addition, the project with develop and refine new measures, and test these measures among a diverse sample of caregivers.
