Joel Anderson and colleagues receive NIH R01 award

June 10, 2023 by artsciweb

Joel Anderson

College of Nursing faculty member Joel Anderson and colleagues received a $3.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health. The project is focused on improving caregiving for people living with dementia and is titled “Enhancing Measurement and Characterization of Roles and Experiences of Sexual and Gender Minority Caregivers of Persons Living with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias”.

Anderson and his team will initiate a comprehensive study on the experiences, roles, and dynamics of LGBTQIA+ caregivers of people living with dementia. Previous research from Anderson’s team has highlighted health disparities experienced by LGBTQIA+ caregivers, such as caregiver stigma, symptoms of depression, and discrimination. The study will use a community-based participatory approach and will leverage the expertise of advisory boards and caregiving experts to identify obstacles experienced by LGBTQIA+ caregivers. In addition, the project with develop and refine new measures, and test these measures among a diverse sample of caregivers.
